Change is Inevitable
I grew up as the oldest child of a broken family. My parents divorced when I was just old enough to understand the change but not old enough to process the "why" behind it. What I took out of it was that I needed to change to become something others wanted—even if it went against my values. I put on a costume so others would appreciate me.
As I built up a career, I added certifications and titles to serve the same purpose: to build further the costume I was wearing… until I had to tear it all down.
I learned that weather changes—and that I can adapt to the weather without losing myself. This is how we should clothe ourselves.
The weather shifts. Challenges emerge. Circumstances evolve when we least expect them. Success doesn’t come from resisting change—it comes from adapting to it.
Just as we layer clothing for unpredictable weather, we must layer our values, skills, and mindset to navigate life’s storms.
The Layering Metaphor
Core Layer: Values and Priorities
Your foundation—like the base layer in clothing—determines your stability. Integrity, growth, and faith ground you when the world is in flux.
“Build your house on a solid foundation to withstand the storm” (Matthew 7:24-27).
Middle Layer: Flexible Skills and Systems
Adaptability comes from skills that insulate you against uncertainty. Learn, grow, and prepare—because opportunity favors the prepared.
“Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity” (Seneca).
Outer Layer: Resilient Mindsets
Your outer layer protects you. A resilient mindset—built on optimism and grit—turns challenges into opportunities for growth.
Power Phrase: “Adapt or stall—the choice is yours.”
