Misalignment
One of the most exciting things about writing a newsletter is that it often leads me into situations that expose the topic previously in the queue. It's either a massive coincidence or some far more significant purpose for me to be challenged and grow in the areas I plan to write about.
This week is no different.
Yesterday morning, for the second month in a row, my son and I joined 100+ individuals at 7 AM on a Friday to discuss purpose. Thanks to the people at Purpose Driven Coffee (Link Here) and a great speaker, Jasmine Michaels, we were inspired to find ways to live from a place of well-being.
Living from a place of well-being is crucial. We often feel disjointed, misaligned, and in pain when we can't achieve this.
This misalignment requires some adjustment and planning, similar to going to a chiropractor and getting a training plan from a fitness instructor - who will both explore the fourth of five questions that we must answer daily.
The Five Questions
Five questions must be answered daily, representing a core set of opportunities to define or redefine our identity.
Because they cut through most of the protections that we build up.
1. Am I doing the right things?
2. Are my contributions valuable?
3. Am I empowered to be effective?
4. Are my actions aligned with essential goals?
5. Do I find purpose and fulfillment?
Your journey to how you answer these questions matters. Because you matter.
Among the many questions we ask throughout the day, a few core questions dig deeply into an area that can shape our identity. This question is no different. It focuses our eyes and quiets our minds from distraction.
4. Are my actions aligned with essential goals?
This question gives us purpose and draws us to a deep and meaningful focus, allowing us to align ourselves with what is essential.
The Three Functions
Alignment requires three functions that we need to find in ourselves. When aligned, we find ourselves in a state of purpose-filled integrity - that is, the state of knowing that we are serving the purpose that brings us joy in a way that serves others, thus driving us forward.
The Coach (visionary)
The coach plays the critical role of identifying and clarifying your goals. They help you set a vision and ensure this vision fits your core values and purpose.
In a career, the coach helps you align your values and purpose with those of your employer, helping you see when and where your time, effort, and energy are best used to serve both your purpose and that of your company.
The Chiropractor
The Chiropractor’s goal is to realign you when you get off course. Sometimes, sharp actions must shift your mindset and focus to reset your alignment.
The chiropractor ensures that the deviations from core alignment don’t last into the future, and the small pain of correction leaves you feeling aligned and re-energized.
The Yoga Instructor
The yoga instructor may be the most necessary role of the three. They teach you how to be present in the moment, manage stress, and maintain balance as you shift and rebalance over time.
The yoga instructor prioritizes inner well-being and balance, giving you the space and the mindset to acknowledge your strength and confidence to face the challenges that will come your way.
Takeaway
To answer the question, “Are my actions aligned with essential goals?” You must integrate the roles of the Coach, the Chiropractor, and the Yoga Instructor.
(Coach) Regularly revisit and refine your goals to ensure consistent alignment with your values and purpose.
(Chiropractor) Continuously assess your actions and make the necessary adjustments to prevent future misalignment.
(Yoga Instructor) Practice mindfulness and meditation exercises that help you manage distractions, decrease stress, and keep your mind free to focus on your goals.
Bringing these three roles together allows you to live out purpose-filled integrity, and share the experience with those around you.
May you live in purpose-filled integrity!
